About the Medvedgrad hike day
Nature park Medvednica and Medvedgrad is one of the best kept secrets…for nature lovers in Zagreb.
The name Medvednica could be translated as “bear mountain”, located just north of Zagreb. Medvednica, a mountain range with its highest peak Sljeme at 1. 033 m, is a unique example of an almost fully preserved natural environment just out the back door of a large city. During our hiking tour we will visit the most attractive fortress “Medvedgrad” from the 13th century that was built after the Tatars invasion. Medieval Medvedgrad was arranged for nobility and heavily fortified with double walls, moats and guard towers. It also had water tanks, a chapel and two palaces. . During a short visit through the castle ruins you will be able to hear the story of the legendary Black Queen, see the eternal flames of the Homeland Altar and take beautiful panoramic photographs of Zagreb.
Meeting with your guide and driver at hotel lobby. Drive towards Medvednica mountain from where you will start a 2 miles long hiking trail (Miroslavec trail) through the woods and alongside a romantic stream. This educational path ends at Kraljičin zdenac (Queen’s Well), a place of stream Kraljevec source and a beautiful small pond where you will be able to rest for a while. A ten minute walk from there will take you to Medvedgrad, a picturesque medieval castle which has been watching over Zagreb for eight centuries. A half an hour walk downhill through the woods will bring you back to the starting point. Drive back to Zagreb hotel or city center in the early afternoon.
